In the theory of dynamical systems, a fundamental question is whether the qualitative properties of a system remain preserved in the presence of computational errors or external perturbations. This seminar explores the deep connection between topological properties and differentiable structures to address this problem.
We begin by examining the expansive property—the property of sensitive dependence on initial conditions—and the shadowing property, which provides the theoretical justification for numerical simulations. The synergy between these two properties leads to the topological stability, a state in which a system maintains its core dynamical behavior despite small perturbations. To study the underlying mechanisms of these phenomena, the talk transitions from general metric spaces to the smooth structure of manifolds. We will analyze how the splitting of the tangent space into contracting and expanding directions (hyperbolicity) generates global stability. Finally, the seminar will briefly introduce partial hyperbolicity, a modern frontier where the emergence of a “center direction” poses new challenges for the global stability.
