An overview on the Complex MongeAmpere Equations
Lý Kim Hà, University of Padova, Italy
Time: 9:00, 3/12/2013, F207.
Abstract:
In this seminar we present a tutorial on the Dirichlet problems for the complex MongeAmpere equation.
After a large initial part devoted to a general introduction to the subject, we shall briefly concentrate on the study of Holder continuity of the solutions, showing how it can be handled for classical complex domains and also for some domains where the classical regularity properties fail to be true.
Lý Kim Hà graduated from our faculty in 2010.

Estimating the Sperm Whale Population in the Gulf of Mexico to Study the Effect of Oil Spill
Nabendu Pal, University of Louisiana, Lafayette, US
Time: 13:30, 22/10/2013, I34
Abstract: In April 2010, British Petroleum (BP)'s Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, which resulted not only in loss of lives, but also an ecological disaster due to millions of gallons of oil spill. It affected the Gulf marine ecology, and affected the economic condition of the southern coastal region of the United States (comprising five states Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida). In order to assess the impact of the oil spill on Gulf ecosystem, a research project was undertaken to estimate the Sperm Whale population density in the affected region. In this talk we will see how the population density of an elusive marine mammal was done based on acoustics and statistical technique. This particular research project was sponsored by the US National Science Foundation.
